Ashton Court Estate

Ashton Court Estate, Bristol UK

Just 2 miles from the centre of Bristol, Ashton Court Estate remains almost entirely surrounded by Somerset countryside.

Nearby Avon Gorge The reason for Bristol's lack of development on its western boundary?

Partially geography, the natural boundary of the River Avon and the Avon Gorge (external link).

Equally I suggest, the influence and lands owned by Ashton Court Estates previous owners the Smyth family.

Ashton Court Estate has been owned by Bristol Council since 1959, with the estate now a major recreational area for Bristol. The estate today is about 850 acres of woodland and meadows with free entry and usually free parking.

This web site is about Ashton Court Estate as it is today. A mixture of ancient woodland and its natural wildlife and many more modern activities.

I favour the woodland, deer parks and other wildlife over the cycling, miniature railway, golf and other activities but enjoy the big events like the Kite Festival and the Balloon Fiesta. But whatever your preference Ashton Court Estate is well worth a visit.

If you would like to see a 'quick' view of the site, try this photo summary of each pages leading photo. There are 12 photos which could take a while for dial-up users.

Mansions and Gardens

Ashton Courts Mansion hosts many functions and weddings as well as a visitor centre and the 'Stables' cafe.

The gardens are open to the public and include a ha-ha with a view looking down over smyth field, the renewed in 2006 rose garden and of course the towering Giant Sequoia's and their squirrels.

Events

The big summer event is the Bristol Balloon Fiesta, drawing over 150,000 visitors on its peak days.

Gusty! The 2006 Festia. 2006 Bristol Balloon Fiesta, the Special Shapes Tether.

But there are other events like Kite Festival in late summer at the top of the estate, still popular but no where near the numbers of the Balloon Fiesta.

For dates and links to event web sites, see the Events in Ashton Court on the right hand side of most pages.

Whats happening at Ashton Court

  • August 2008: Balloon Fiesta Red Arrows appearing on Sunday the 10th
  • May 2008: ½ of the mansion car parks on Kennel Lodge Road (still) being levelled and resurfaced.
  • January 2008: (external link) Giant Sequoia's cut down. Restoring the estate to a 18th Century plan, not impressed by this!

Woodland and Meadows

Its not all hustle and bustle, there are many much quieter places on the estate.
