"The Domesday Oak suffered partial structural failure earlier in the year.
We attempted to prevent this part collapsing by installing struts.
However the original failure was more extensive than thought and further substantial cracks developed despite the struts.
At this point it was accepted that the weakened part of the tree would eventually collapse and the tree was cordoned off to allow this to happen naturally.
Following the partial failure the remaining standing part of the tree was pruned to reduce end weight and ensuring a good chance that this part of the tree would persist.
The fallen section has been made safe and left in situ and forms an interesting feature in its own right."
